Florida A&M band member convicted of manslaughter and felony hazing in death of band member

ORLANDO, Fla. – A former Florida A&M band member accused of being the ringleader of a brutal hazing ritual known as "Crossing Bus C" that killed a drum major was convicted Friday of manslaughter and felony hazing.

Prosecutors said Dante Martin, 27, was known as "the president of Bus C" and organized the initiations that required fellow band members to try to make their way through a pounding gauntlet of fists, drumsticks and mallets from the front of the bus to the back in November 2011 after a football game. Two other band members went through the bus before Robert Champion, 26, of Decatur, Georgia. Martin was convicted of misdemeanor hazing counts in their beatings.

Champion's parents sat silently as the verdicts were read. Martin sat with his head down.

Martin's sentencing was set for Jan. 9 and he was taken into custody. Manslaughter is punishable by up to 15 years in prison in Florida. More

Prosecutors vowed to seek the death penalty for Eric Frein, the suspected cop killer nabbed Thursday night in rural Pennsylvania after a seven-week manhunt that ended with the self-styled survivalist shackled in the handcuffs of his alleged victim.

The search ended Thursday night when U.S. Marshals arrested Frein in an airport hangar near Buck Hill.

Frein was slapped with the handcuffs of the Pennsylvania state trooper he allegedly shot and killed, making it a fitting end to the 48-day manhunt. Cpl. Bryon Dickson was 38-years-old when Frein allegedly opened fire outside the Blooming Grove state police barracks on Sept. 12.

Death of child left in refrigerator officially ruled a homicide; charges expected

Houston - The death of a 9-year-old girl whose body was left in a refrigerator officially has been ruled a homicide.

Ayahna Comb's dehydrated and malnourished body was discovered in the refrigerator of her mother's apartment in southwest Houston in early June. A caseworker with Child Protective Services said in a court hearing days later that the girl had died in late January and left in the kitchen appliance.

"Investigators are aware of the ruling, and do expect charges to be filed," said Jodi Silva, a Houston Police Department spokeswoman. "It's too early to say when and what type of charges will be filed."

Ayahna's body weighed just 14 pounds when discovered in the apartment of her mother, 34-year-old Amber Keyes (picture). She and Armand Comb, Ayahna's 38-year-old father, had broken up years before and did not live together.  More

Man Choked Girlfriend Because She Didn’t Look ‘Like She Was On The Internet’

Laurel County, Kentucky - A Georgia man is accused of assaulting a woman he’d driven to Kentucky to be with, but who didn’t look “like she was on the Internet.”

Cornelius Jefferson, 33, moved from his Georgia home to Eastern Kentucky in hopes of being with the woman he had met online, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department.

But an argument ensued upon their first meeting in which Jefferson allegedly choked her and threw food at her before leaving the scene on foot with two suitcases.

The Tuesday assault allegedly took place because the woman failed to match her appearance in her online profile — a situation of intentional deception online that is often referred to as being “catfished.” More

Alabama – Matthew and Patricia Ayers will live out the rest of their lives in prison after having been given the maximum sentence of a combined 2,340 years, following their conviction for over 100 counts of producing child pornography.

U.S. District Judge L. Scott Coogler, who ruled in the couple’s case, called this “the worst case I have personally dealt with, including murders.”

The Alabama couple pleaded guilty to child pornography charges in June after victimizing a minor in their custody for three and a half years – between the summer of 2010 to January 2013, the Conservative Tribune reported.

Patricia Ayers was given 1,590 years in prison for 53 counts of producing child pornography and Matthew was sentenced to 750 years for 25 counts of the same crime.

In their plea agreement both Ayers acknowledged that they photographed the child in lewd and lascivious poses and that each took turns engaging in sex acts with the child while the other photographed the sick interactions, according to the report. More

New York – A hatchet-swinging psycho with Islamic militant leanings turned a busy Queens street corner into a scene of bloody chaos Thursday, chopping a rookie cop in the back of the head and slicing a second officer on the arm before two other officers shot him dead.

House of Commons Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers brought gunman down

Canada – House of Commons Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers was hailed across Canada as the hero who brought down a deranged gunman before he could spill any more innocent blood.

The 58-year-old former Mountie was best known for marching a massive gold mace into the House Commons before each session. The mace is a symbol of the queen of England’s authority over Canada. More

Vermont man guilty of luring, killing teacher

BURLINGTON, Vt. – A part-time snowplow driver was convicted Wednesday of luring a prep-school teacher out of her Vermont home under the guise of a broken down car, then killed her.

A jury rejected arguments by Allen Prue's defense that his wife, Patricia Prue, killed 33-year-old Melissa Jenkins in a jealous rage on March 25, 2012.

Prosecutors said the Prues lured Jenkins from her home as part of a long-planned crime. Jenkins' nude body was found the next day in the Connecticut River. She had been strangled.

Allen Prue, 32, cried when the jury's verdict was announced after six hours of deliberations. His lawyer had argued his client was unaware of his wife's plan to kill Jenkins. More

Man faked coma for 2 years to avoid court

Autopsy finds Michael Brown shot at close range, not running from cop

Missouri - The 18-year-old black man whose fatal shooting by a white police officer in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson in August touched off weeks of racially-charged rioting, had marijuana in his system, was initially shot at close range and does not appear to have been killed while running away, according to experts who reviewed the official autopsy and toxicology report.

The documents, obtained by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and analyzed by two experts not directly involved in the case, appears to contradict witness accounts that claimed Brown was running away from Police Officer Darren Wilson, 28, when he was killed on Aug. 9.

The new information comes on the heels of reports that Wilson told authorities Brown had reached inside Wilson’s police SUV and struggled for his gun, resulting in Wilson firing twice, hitting Brown once in the hand. Moments later and outside of the vehicle, Wilson fired the fatal bullets that sparked a national controversy. More

MINNEAPOLIS – A wet-willy has landed a man in trouble with police.

Police told our sister station in Mankato that 24-year-old Riley Swearingen put his pointer finger in an officer’s ear while waiting in line for a bus early Saturday morning.

Since it involved bodily fluids, police say it rises to the level of felony assault.

Prosecutors say his blood alcohol content was 0.18 at the time of the incident.

“We have an assault of improper touching from one person to another without consent occur, which leads to the credibility of assault,” said Cmdr. Jeremy Clifton. More

Serial Killer Suspect Left Trail Of Escalating Offenses

Darren Vann has a history of run-ins with police across the country going back 20 years.

It’s a record that spans four states, escalating from speeding tickets to sexual assaults. Somewhere along the line, police say the 43-year-old Vann became a serial killer.

His life is now under a microscope, with authorities saying his killing spree could go well beyond the bodies of Anith Jones, Afrikka Hardy and five other women he has led them to.

Vann’s run-ins with police go back as far as 20 years, starting in 1993, with tickets for speeding and driving without a license in North Carolina, and in Calumet City, he pleaded guilty to aggravated fleeing from police.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday that Vann tried to set himself and his then-girlfriend on fire in April 2004. More

Oscar Pistorius gets 5 years in jail, but he could be out in less than one

A South African judge sentenced former Olympic and Paralymic sprinter Oscar Pistorius to a maximum of five years in prison Tuesday for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend last February, though lawyers on both sides of the case later acknowledged that he is unlikely to serve his full sentence in prison.

Pistorius' defense team told Sky News that he would likely serve 10 months, or one-sixth of the term handed down by Judge Thokozile Masipa, before being released to serve the remaining time under house arrest. However, a spokesman for South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority said that the man once known as "The Blade Runner" would likely serve 20 months behind bars, before stating that such matters were "not for the NPA to decide."

Judge Masipa also handed the double-amputee a three-year suspended sentence on a firearms charge. She had found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, but had acquitted him of the more serious crime of murder last month. More

KEENE, New Hampshire – Violent disturbances near Keene State College during an annual pumpkin festival lasted until early Sunday and involved dozens of arrests and injuries, as well as police in riot gear using tear gas to disperse crowds.

Keene State student Ellery Murray told The Boston Globe that she was at a party Saturday that had drawn a large crowd when people started throwing things.

“People were just throwing everything they could find — rocks, skateboards, buckets, pumpkins,” she said. “People just got too drunk.”

The parties around the school coincided with the annual Keene Pumpkin Festival, where the community tries to set a world record of the largest number of carved and lighted jack-o-lanterns in one place. More

Misty Upham's father says she fell to her death trying to flee police

In the statement her father, Charles said his daughter suffered from mental illness and had been poorly treated by the local police department.

"Misty was afraid of the Auburn PD officers with good reason," he said. "In an incident prior to her disappearance, the Auburn PD came to pick up Misty on an involuntary transport to the ER. She was cuffed and placed in a police car. Some of the officers began to taunt and tease her while she was in the car. Because it was dark they couldn't see that we, her family, were outside our apartment just across the street witnessing this behavior."

"They were tapping on the window making faces at her. Misty was crying and she told them, 'You can't treat me like this. I'm a movie actress and I will use my connections to expose you.' Then another officer walked up to her asked, 'Are you a movie star? Then why don't [you] complain to George Clooney!'" More

Police find human remains in search for missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham

Police say human remains found Saturday in Virginia could be those of missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham – who was last seen on Sept. 13.

Further forensic tests are needed to confirm whether the remains are those of Hannah Graham, but Graham's parents were notified of the preliminary findings, Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo told a news conference.

The remains were found on an abandoned property in southern Albemarle County by a search team from the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office, Longo said.

They are being transported to Richmond for identification.

"Right now we have the discovery of human remains and a great deal of work ahead of us,"said Col. Steve Sellers, Albemarle County Police chief. "We cannot and will not jump to any conclusions regarding today's discovery. I ask for the public's patience as we move forward and pursue what is now a new, ongoing death investigation." More

After actress Misty Upham found dead, family accuses police of racism, ignoring pleas

In a statement on Facebook Friday, Upham’s family say they believe that Misty Upham accidentally fell to her death.

She did not commit suicide. We believe she ran into the wooded area behind her apartment to hide from the police. The area in question has a hidden drop off and evidence suggests that she slipped and fell off of the steep embankment when she tried to get out of a view from the road.

But Tracy Rector, a friend of Upham’s who is serving as a family spokeswoman, said the actress’s relatives are furious that Auburn police did nothing to aid in the search. Upham was found by a search party of friends and family on Thursday.

The body of actress Misty Upham, 32, was found at the bottom of a steep cliff in in a densely wooded area of Auburn, Wash., on Thursday, a spokeswoman for the family confirmed. More
