At least three people saw the 27-year-old man jump in and start swimming toward the dock about 10:40 p.m. Friday, police said.
About halfway there, the man went under and never returned to the surface.
He was pulled from the water and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and pronounced dead there about 11:20 p.m., a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said.
Authorities withheld his name, pending notification of his family.
