U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk R-Ill. claimed on Thursday that 429 children have been sent to Chicago, in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services, after arriving from Central America, part of the surge of unaccompanied young illegal immigrants massing at the U.S. southern border.
Kirk provided no other details about where in Chicago the children were being sheltered. In a curious move, Kirk sent letters to the U.S. Ambassadors to Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador asking, his office said in a statement, "whether or not their embassies have performed criminal background checks on the unaccompanied alien children who have entered the United States."
