When a firm with whom we do a considerable amount of business invited us to their box at Mt Smart for a Warriors match, we didn't need asking twice. This weekend was an ideal fit around a number of commitments, and it proved to be an ideal one.
The Warriors were ruthless last night as they took the Parramatta Eels apart on a surprisingly good surface, given the weather in the lead-up. Scoring eight unanswered tries, all converted for a 48-nil scoreline, they showed that they are definitely play-off material. And their points for and against differential received a welcome boost which could prove crucial later in the year in a tight competition ladder.
But it was the Warriors' defence that impressed the most last night. Parramatta attacked hard in the second half, but the Warriors looked absolutely desperate to keep the Eels to zero, and they achieved it.
Andrew McFadden deserves lots of credit for the way he has turned the side around since the debacle at Cronulla which saw Matt Elliott sacked. But it's obvious too that this is a united and happy team. And Sam Tompkins revelled in the Wigan-like weather, playing his best match in a Warriors jersey
We were well fed and watered last night by our hosts, and wonderfully entertained by the home side. It's ten years since we made it to a Warriors match at Mt Smart. We're sure another decade won't elapse before we go back.
