NYPD top cop Bill Bratton had disbanded a unit that spied on mosques and other places frequented by Muslims in April. Now he has doubled down on the promise to protect the constitutional rights afforded to believers of Islam.
The NYPD’s top cop Wednesday promised to protect the rights of the city’s Muslims during a pre-Ramadan conference at police headquarters in Manhattan.
“You have my pledge as commissioner we will not jeopardize that trust that all our efforts are geared toward increasing,” Bill Bratton told Muslim leaders at 1 Police Plaza. “You also have my pledge that we will continue to ensure policing is lawful, constitutional, effective and respectful.”
The conference has been an annual event for a decade but marked a first for Bratton, who’s been commissioner for about six months.
His predecessor, Raymond Kelly, came under intense criticism for keeping an eye on Muslim communities. In April, the NYPD disbanded a unit that spied on mosques and other places frequented by Muslims.
