Racine police were called to a home in the 3000 block of Durand Ave. at 12:16 p.m. Sunday for a report of a suicidal man, identified as 37-year-old Rajko Utvic.
Initial reports indicate that police found Utvic armed with a knife and that Utvic refused to drop the knife and advanced on the officers, who had ordered him to drop the weapons, according to the Racine County Sheriff's Office.
Utvic was shot and killed by one of the Racine police officers.
The Sheriff's Office will investigate the shooting, and once that investigation concludes, the information will be sent to the Racine County District Attorney's Office for review.
Utvic had a prior battery conviction for choking another man and beating his head, but Utvic's neighbors on Sunday described him as quiet and gentle and as an individual who struggled with mental illness, according to the Journal Times.
