Gunmen launch attack on Kabul International Airport
Gunmen have staged an attack on Kabul International Airport, according to Afghan officials. Authorities say the attackers have been surrounded by Afghan security services.
Gunmen opened fire on Kabul International Airport on Thursday after seizing a building just north of the facility.
The airport has not been damaged and Afghan security forces have surrounded the gunmen, according to Kabul police spokesman Hasmat Stanekzai.
"There are no reports of casualties and it is unclear how many insurgents are involved," Stanekzai said.
An airport official told Reuters news agency that all flights have been diverted from Kabul to other cities in Afghanistan.
"Due to the closeness of the attack to the runway, Kabul airport is now closed to all flights," the official said.
Kabul International Airport is used for both civilian and military traffic. The airport is home to an operations base for the NATO-led international forces.
