Nebanda Boyfriend Acquitted

Kampala High Court has acquitted Adam Kalungi of causing the death of former Butaleja Woman MP, Cerinah Nebanda, Chimp Corps report.

Kalungi had appealed against the four-year sentence handed to him by Makindye Chief Magistrate Esther Nambayo in February after being convicted of unlawfully causing Nebanda's death.

Justice Lameck Mukasa on Friday agreed with the defence team that Kalungi was wrongfully convicted of manslaughter because he did not have the competence of a medical doctor to save Nebanda's life after the MP took an overdose of cocaine.

Court was also convinced that Kalungi did whatever he could to save Nebanda's life by contacting two doctors to treat the lawmaker and also driving her to the nearest health centre.

Makindye Court held then that Nebanda died out of Kalungi's actions in that he had cocaine and heroin in his house which the former took, leading to her demise.

Dissatisfied with both his conviction and sentence, Kalungi appealed to the High Court saying that the lower court did not properly evaluate the evidence hence arriving at a wrong conclusion.

During the hearing, prosecution wondered why Kalungi has up to date not offered an explanation to the nation as to why he had to flee the country to Kenya after the MP's death.

The State also argued that Kalungi fled to Kenya because of a guilty conscience.

The ruling implies Kalungi is now a free man.
