New Zealand First celebrates 21 years at the party's annual conference this weekend. And List MP Richard "Wogistan" Prosser has a policy which should find plenty of red-necked support; the Herald reports:
A hardline law and order policy by NZ First would offer greater protection to homeowners, farmers and shop keepers who shoot to kill intruders during home invasions or burglaries.
Along with a 40-year mandatory non-parole sentence for premeditated murder, NZ First wants the Crimes Act amended to give certainty over the use of "reasonable force" for self-defence.
Ahead of the party's annual convention this weekend, law and order spokesman Richard Prosser said the policy was a response to a string of incidents that had seen farmers and shopkeepers in court over their use of firearms or even hockey sticks against would-be robbers.
Mr Prosser said so-called "castle doctrine" laws in some US states, which saw Texan Joe Horn acquitted after his 2007 fatal shooting of two men who had burgled his neighbour's home, were "so over the top that it wouldn't be something that I think anyone in New Zealand would give consideration to".
"But what I do think people have a desire for is the ability to actually defend themselves and their families in their own homes."
Mr Prosser wants a regime based on that introduced in Ireland in 2011 following controversy over the 2004 shooting of an Irish traveller by a farmer.
NZ First's proposal would allow for homeowners to use "any firearm that is lawfully available to that person" to defend themselves.
It's certainly an interesting policy from NZ First. And it has attracted Rod Emmerson's attention, which isn't necessarily a good thing for Winston First:Anyway, congratulations to Winston and his cult party. Surviving for 21 years is quite an achievement, although Winston First's longer-term survival is not by any means set in concrete and the party appears not to have a succession plan.
Perhaps Emmerson's cartoon is a depiction of what it'll be like the day that Winston is voted out again, and someone comes round to give him the bad news!

Trevor Mallard's policy to de-extinct the Moa may not be a goer (according to his leader, anyway), but that hasn't stopped Mallard or his ABC sidekick Clare Curran pushing the idea at every opportunity, despite David Cunliffe having told them not to.
It seems that the long-dead Moa has become something of a metaphor for the struggling Labour Party. Is extinction beckoning the party as well?
Herald cartoonist Rod Emmerson makes no attempt to hide his contempt of convicted sex offender Rolf Harris:Like the good cartoonist he is, Emmerson has pushed right to the bounds of decency with this cartoon, in our ever-humble opinion. There is widespread revulsion at the unmasking of the dark side of Harris, as those of us who grew up with his music and TV shows come to terms with the double life he led.

The Labour Party made hay while the sun shone with regard to its allegations that National and Donghua Liu were too close. But when David Cunliffe walked into the trap that he himself had set, he has bleated loudly about the unfairness of it all. Never mind that Labour has tried its very hardest to paint National as sinners; when the "gotcha" merchants fell victim to a self-induced "gotcha", they didn't like it up 'em, as Lance Corporal Jack Jones was wont to say.David Cunliffe has been hoist by his own petard; how sad.

If we have one criticism of Emmerson's cartoon, there could perhaps have been a flea on the tail that's wagging the dog. But otherwise, this is an excellent and simple critique of the deeply flawed and flea-infested electoral system that New Zealanders voted to retain in 2011.

Few words are needed, except to commend SonovaMin on his/her sense of humour, and an ability, over time, to capture David Cunliffe's likeness better than most cartoonists. Please keep up the fine work!
Herald cartoonist Rod Emmerson offers this pictorial commentary into the many inscrutable faces of Judith Collins, with one exception.
Judith Collins ought not to have responded as she did about Katie Bradford at the weekend, and has rightly personally apologised to the TVNZ journalist. But her lashing out is also quite understandable, given some of the allegations levied against her both by the media and some of her political foes.Perhaps she would have been better advised to lash out at Winston Peters, who continues to put two and two together and get 22. Question Time this afternoon will be a must-watch.
