David Cunliffe had a brief meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. But was this REALLY the occasion for war stories?
It certainly is a novel introduction from Mr Cunliffe, and Bill Ralston is right on the money in questioning the likely effect on relations between the two men.
In the meantime, we wait with bated breath to see how long Mr Cunliffe's nice, sledge-free campaign lasts. At least we know now that there'll no repeat of this awkward moment from the 2011 election campaign:
